Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 Standard Review

I've been fascinated with flight since I was a teensy kid, and dreamed of being a pilot. My career went another direction, but my dream of piloting remained. Since planes are kind of expensive (!) I recently decided to go the budget route, and I've had great fun with this program.br /br /This sim may be ancient (seven + years old!) but there's plenty of variety in the kinds of flying and modifications of skill levels available. After flying around the world a few times in my 777 (you can set the autopilot and choose the game to run at 16x normal speed, giving you time to shower before nearing Cape Town), and getting good enough to land over 50% of the time without crashing, I settled on my 737, a much more nimble airplane, and I zoom all over the world now, doing barrel rolls and loops when I'm in the mood, and landing nicely after a vertical descent, with spins for variety, from 34,000 feet.br /br /The game has realistic sounds, a realistic sense of controlling an airplane, and good enough scenery. I'm pleased.br /br /By the way, I wondered if I should spend the bucks to get a yoke with foot controls, but decided to stay inexpensive with a joystick (Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick), and that's worked out just fine for me.

IMicrosoft Flight Simulator 2002, Standard Edition/I is the latest version of Microsoft's highly realistic aviation simulation--the top-selling PC flight simulation ever produced. IFS 2002/I introduces many exciting features, including interactive air traffic control (ATC) and auto-generated scenery, plus challenging new aircraft and stunning visual enhancements that truly make IFlight Simulator 2002, Standard Edition/I "as real as it gets." pIFlight Simulator 2002, Standard Edition/I includes a wide variety of aircraft for you to fly--from a new Cessna 208 Caravan floatplane to the Boeing 747-400 jumbo jet. You can splash down in a lake, hover in the Bell 206B JetRanger III helicopter, practice aerobatics in the Extra 300S, or fly like a famous World War II fighter ace in a Sopwith Camel. IFS 2002 Standard/I includes a total of 12 aircraft.pThe most dramatic new features common to both the standard and pro editions are the interactive air traffic control system, crowded skies, and auto-generated scenery.pThe interactive air traffic control feature adds a new dimension to iFlight Simulator/i. Now you can ask for takeoff clearance, get vectors for an instrument approach, and hear other traffic as you fly. In fact, the "other traffic" is itself a new feature: a new artificial intelligence system generates air traffic around and between airports.pIt'll be hard to pay attention to the air traffic, however, as the scenery in IFS 2002/I is so attractive. As you fly above cities, towns, farmland, and dramatic landscapes, IFlight Simulator/I adds buildings and vegetation appropriate to the terrain below. Office buildings, factories, homes, farmhouses, and trees smoothly blend in on the horizon and fill the entire area with detail that adds unprecedented depth and reality to the game.pOther features include more than 21,000 airports, multiplayer capability, improved weather effects, a moving map and GPS system, in-depth flight analysis, and more.
